I Survived the Holidays: How Ugift® Can Help You, Too

January 29, 2018

By Suzanne Fetky, vice president of marketing at Ascensus College Savings

I enjoy the holidays as much as I can. I love spending time with my kids, my family, and my friends. What I don’t enjoy: the chaos of shopping malls and the pressure to find the perfect gift. Now that the holidays are over, I can happily report that I survived the season with the help of Ugift®. Instead of spending money on a toy that will likely be forgotten in about two weeks, I contributed to the 529 plans for kids in my family.

What is Ugift®?

Ugift is an easy and increasingly popular way for friends and family to contribute to a 529 college savings plan. Here’s how it works:

  1. happy holidays.jpgThe parent or guardian receives a Ugift code on their 529 plan’s account website and shares it with friends and family.
  2. Gift givers go to the Ugift website, enter that code, and specify the amount of their gift.
  3. A printable certificate can be downloaded so recipients will have a gift to open!

Most 529 plans can be opened by a U.S. citizen or resident alien age 18+. The saver can be a parent, grandparent, second cousin twice removed, or even a friend. So, if there is a child in your life that doesn’t already have a 529 account, now would be a great time to talk about opening one. You have plenty of time to learn more about 529 plans on our website and be prepared for the next season of giving.
